Illustration - Tinie Temper Music Video

Interpreting a musical track in an unconventional and pioneering way is a difficult task.  Although the concept of visually display this interpretation in a style that associable to all music lovers could be considered as difficult, I thrived on the potential challenge.

Music is no longer consumed in the same fashion.  In fact as the accessibility of music has increase ten fold along with technological advancement allowing us as user to more successfully interact with it. But as with all projects until I understood my brief and concluded that without research behind interaction and music video development I could not begin to start my designing process. Although I now had evolved my understanding of the continuing progression within these fields I still needed to decided upon a song.
After brainstorming some of the most recent and popular songs with my favourite genres of music (R&B, Easy Listening, Soul, Jazz, Hip-Hop), it dawned upon me that the most influential part of music can be its lyrics rather than its title.  Although stereotypical images appeared with most of my most popular lyrical choices it became apparent that an abstract concept might be slightly more appropriate.  This is why Tiny Temper’s “Written in the Stars” was more than the right choice for me.
After Brainstorming and generating rough sketches I started to create vectored star chart drawings to represent the some significant lyrics within the song. Demonstrating the ambition of “Reaching for the stars” (your goals) yet “feeling a million miles” away was the perfect choice.  My aim to create a scene that did not include random visual representations but rather presented a message of reaching the glamorous goals and showing it was achievable.  I experimented with textures and effects to achieve my final piece; taking into consideration that most appropriate lyrics for my medium and audience, deciding to exclude the use of type to allow the piece to make a stronger visual impact especially appropriate for the type of media.  I also used subtle and noticeable special effects.  The colours used in this project also supported it theme.  By using Horoscope and illustrating the lyrics through the visual star charts the colours support the visual environment being created; the dark textured night sky is the perfect backdrop to bright star formations- after all it what we see when we look up, it also a vision of hope.  To also integrate the glamorous goal achieving theme I added a golden retro glow to connect past and future music videos alike and display Tiny in an almost royal state.

As my target audience is so general I have taken the concept of horoscopes which is accessible to young and old users alike and encourage them to think about the wider meaning of the artist words i.e. we can all reach our goals-just keep going.

If I had a more extended piece of time I would continue to develop this project by integrated more 3D drawing that would enhance the believability of the scene and the ability to follow the same journey through the stars to your goal.  I would also continue to develop my After Effect knowledge to enhance the professionalism.
